Our Story
Founded in 2025, Equal Notes was established on the belief that every child deserves access to the joy, growth, and sense of belonging that music can provide. Although music education has the power to build confidence, discipline, creativity, and connection, access to those opportunities remains uneven. For many students, financial barriers and limited resources place meaningful musical instruction out of reach.
The inspiration for Equal Notes took shape when founder Hawon Song visited the Dominican Republic and saw firsthand how powerfully music could bring joy to children, even in settings with limited resources. What stood out was not the quality of the instruments or the formality of the setting, but the energy, connection, and happiness that music created. That experience underscored a lasting truth: music has the ability to uplift and unite, but too many children are denied the opportunity to experience it simply because access is unequal.
Moved by that realization, Hawon Song founded Equal Notes to help expand access to high-quality music education for students in underserved communities. The organization was created not only to provide instruction, but also to remove the barriers that prevent young people from discovering their potential through music.
Today, Equal Notes continues that mission through free or low-cost instruction, mentorship, ensemble experiences, and instrument access. What began as a moment of reflection has grown into a broader commitment to equity, service, and community impact, rooted in the belief that every child should have the opportunity to learn, create, and thrive through music.
